A good dog is just as good as a husband

I had my thumb out for no more than five minutes before Janet stopped to give me a lift from Aberdeen to Tamworth.

She was a cattle farmer from the Western Downs in Queensland, on her way home from Cooma near the Snowy Mountains, where she had picked up a new dog Ruster.

She has fifteen dogs, all Koolies, which help her muster 700 head of Brahman cattle. She also keeps 30 sheep and 40 goats, mainly to train her young dogs on.

Here’s what she had to say about her land, and working it on her own…

You'd be surprised how many women are out there working the land, particularly when times are tough! Its often the women who are left behind to manage the farm while their partner heads off in search of other work.
